Educational Strategy Used by MetResectThe primary educational strategy used by this tool is to supply you with opinions and commentary about specific real cases (51 cases representing many different scenarios) managed by experts in the field. The goal is to allow you to see the breadth of opinion about many important issues and decide for yourself what options seem most reasonable. This opinion and commentary is supplemented by links to important references (with PubMed links to these references and slide sets based on the references to allow a quick overview of their content and conclusions). There is a very broad range of opinion about many issues relating to the treatment of colorectal cancer metastatic to the liver. Often when there is such a breath of opinion on a topic it is because there is little Level 1 evidence based on randomized clinical trials. This is certainly the case for many of the issues (the relative value and optimal use of various therapies, and who most benefits from them) that must be addressed about the resection of hepatic metastases due to colorectal cancer. Nonetheless discussions of this topic are evidence based drawing on information from patient series, and also from indirect inferences based on the results of randomized adjuvant therapy trials and/or randomized trials of patients with unresected disease. Thus at the heart of this educational tool is the ability for you to review cases. You can do this either by matching the case to a clinical scenario of interest to you, or by reviewing all cases presented by a specific expert or experts. From these cases (or from anywhere within the tool) you can review the literature in the field. Continue for a discussion of the origins and authorship of this tool |
